Tomb Raider Remastered Co-op Mod
Tomb Raider Remastered, one run between you. Same level, same enemies, same pickups, same puzzles, so whatever one of you does, the rest of you live with.
Burn's Multiplayer v3 is in public test on Tomb Raider I Remastered now, with II and III next.
What co-op shares
Enemies and Bosses
One wolf, one bear, one mutant for the whole lobby, T-Rex, Torso and Natla included. Kill it and it's dead for everyone.
Pickups and Push Blocks
Pick something up, keys and artefacts included, and it's gone for everyone. Blocks stay wherever they were last shoved.
Switches, Traps and Puzzles
Pull a lever and the door's open for all of you. Set off a trap and it's gone off for all of you. Same for every puzzle.
Weapons and Ammo
Guns and ammo go into one shared inventory, on by default. Turn it off and everyone keeps their own.
Medipacks
Pooled the same way, with a toggle of its own if you'd rather everyone rations their own.
Your Health Stays Yours
Never shared. Go down and it's only you that's out.
Level Ends
Walk out and you move on, the others follow when they're ready. The Larson fight and taking the Scion send everyone through together.
Three toggles, mix them how you like
All on out of the box.
- Co-op Environment. The big one. Enemies, objects, switches and puzzles are shared. Off, and you're back to seeing each other while playing your own separate games, v2 style.
- Co-op Weapons. Guns and ammo in the inventory are pooled across the session.
- Co-op Medipacks. Small and large medipacks are pooled too.
Shared world but your own guns? Knock Weapons off. Rationing your own healing? Medipacks off. They're all in the game's menu under Control Settings, so you can change your mind mid-session.
Two scalers sit under the same menu. Enemy Health runs 1x to 10x, handy when four of you are emptying into the same bear. Pickup Quantity runs 1 to 10, so one medipack on the floor can be ten for whoever grabs it.
Dying, saving and joining late
Health's never shared, so when Lara goes down it's only you that's out. Restart the level and you're stood at the start with the level wherever the session's got to, so you run back and catch up.
Joining late works the same way. Drop into a level the others have been in for twenty minutes and you get it as it is now, dead enemies and all.
Saving works. A load puts your position back and syncs the level to the session, so it's your spot that comes back, not your version of the map.
How it works
v2 only ever sent where Lara was and what she was doing. v3 sends the level. Each game reports what it's just changed, the server passes that to everyone else in the lobby and keeps enough of it to bring late joiners up to date.
Enemies are the one thing with an owner. Whoever's closest and getting attacked is running that creature, and everyone else watches their copy. Traps, switches, doors and blocks are hooked into the game's code and announce when they change.
The long version, flipmaps included, is in the v3.0.0-rc1 notes, and for how multiplayer got into these games at all, there's how multiplayer is possible.
Which games, and what you need
Games
Tomb Raider I Remastered, all of it, main game, Unfinished Business and Croft Manor. II is next, then III. Until they land, and for IV to VI, v2 multiplayer gets you into the same level as your friends, you just each play your own copy.
Requirements
The latest patch of Tomb Raider I-III Remastered on Steam, GOG or Epic, on Windows. Older patches aren't supported. Linux under Proton is untested, so if you try it, say how it went in the Discord.
How to play co-op
- Download: Grab the v3 zip from the downloads page and extract it. Keep the DLL next to the exe.
- Launch: Run the exe, pick the game, go online, put a name in, and either take the public lobby or type a code you've agreed with your friends.
- In the game: Control Settings, then Mods/Multiplayer. The co-op toggles are already on. Open Key Bindings and bind Chat, nothing's bound out of the box.
- Play: Load a level. Anyone in your lobby and your level with Co-op Environment on is in your run. Lost someone? Open chat and type
/teleportand their name.
Co-op questions
Does Tomb Raider Remastered have co-op?
Not officially. Burn's Multiplayer v3 adds it, free. Enemies, pickups, switches and puzzles are shared across the lobby, so everyone's on the same run. It's on Tomb Raider I Remastered now, II and III next.
Is it split screen or local co-op?
Split screen, no, everyone's on their own PC with their own copy of the game. LAN, yes. The server exe is in the download, so run it on one PC and point everyone's launcher at that machine.
How many people can play co-op together?
Your game draws up to 32 players in a level, and the server has no cap of its own.
Can I mix co-op and PvP?
Yes. PvP is its own toggle and only affects the people who've turned it on, so you can share the level with everyone and still shoot the ones who asked for it.
Can I make enemies tougher in co-op?
Yes. Enemy Health goes from 1x to 10x under Mods/Multiplayer and every enemy in the level gets that much. Pickup Quantity goes from 1 to 10 the same way, so one item on the floor is that many when you grab it.
What happens when I die in co-op?
Only you die, health's never shared. Restart the level and you're back at the start, synced to wherever the session's got to, then run back and catch up.
Does saving work in co-op?
Yes. A load puts your position back and syncs the level to the session, so the run carries on from where everyone else is. A save made in co-op also loads on your own later, with every enemy alive.
Which games and stores does co-op support?
Tomb Raider I Remastered, Unfinished Business and Croft Manor included, on Steam, GOG or Epic, on the latest patch. II is next, then III.
Do achievements still work with the co-op mod running?
No. Achievements are off while v3 is running.
Does the co-op mod work on Linux or Steam Deck?
Officially it's Windows only. It's native code, so there's a fair chance it runs under Proton, but it's untested. Try it and say how it went in the Discord.
Do I need v3 for co-op, or does v2 do it?
v3 only. v2 puts you in the same level as your friends but everyone plays their own copy. v3 is a separate download.
Keep it going
Free, whether you're on the community server or running your own on a LAN. Co-op took a rewrite from scratch, and II and III are still to come.
If a shared run's been worth something, chuck in what you reckon that is. Footer name and a Discord role come with it.
